China beats 3-0 South Korea in badminton to win seventh Sudirman Cup

GUANGZHOU, China — China beat South Korea 3-0 at badminton to win its seventh Sudirman Cup on Sunday in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.

Zheng Bo and Yu Yang led the Chinese charge, rallying to beat Koreans Lee Yong-dae and Lee Hyo-jung – both gold medallists at the Beijing Olympics – 18-21, 21-19, 21-16 in mixed doubles.

China’s Lin Dan, who won gold in Beijing, defeated Park Sung-hwan 21-14, 21-18 in men’s singles in the biennial competition.

The Chinese sealed the overall victory when Beijing silver medallists Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng beat Jung Jae-sung and Lee Young-dae 21-14, 17-21, 21-19 in men’s doubles at the Guangzhou Gymnasium.

Indonesia and Malaysia took bronze.

Korea has won three titles in the event, named after Dick Sudirman, a former player and founder of the Badminton Association of Indonesia. China has only lost one of the last eight competitions.
