Malaysia Open: Chong Wei Qualifies For Quarterfinals

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 (Bernama) — Defending champion, Lee Chong Wei is the only Malaysian singles who booked his berth in the Malaysia Open quarterfinals at Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium early Friday morning.

The world number two and the championship second seed defeated Wacha Przemyslaw from Poland 21-14, 21-17 in 30 minutes in the second round to face Bao Chunlai from China Friday.

Bao had earlier beaten another Malaysian player, Kuan Beng Hong 21-10, 21-13.

Meanwhile, Yeoh Kay Bin lost to 5/8 seed from China, Chen Yu 13-21, 21-14, 21-13.

Former Malaysian top single, Wong Choong Hann also lost 21-15, 18-21, 20-22 to world junior champion, Chen Jin from China.

Doha Asian Games double gold medalist, Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong advanced to the quarterfinals after beating the Danish pair, Simon Mollyhus/Anders Kristiansen 21-18, 21-19.

Kien Keat/Boon Heong will face Shuichi Sakamoto/Shintaro Ikeda from Japan.

Earlier, the young Malaysian pair, Ong Soon Hock/Tan Bin Shen sprang a surprise when they beat world number one pair, Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun from China 25-23, 21-19 and will meet the United States and Indonesian combination of Tony Gunawan and Candra Wijaya Friday.

Vietnam SEA Games 2003 gold medalist, Wong Mew Chew was the only Malaysian woman singles to survive after compatriot Julia Wong lost to 5/8 seed, Zhu Lin from China.

Mew Choo beat India’s Saina Nehwal 21-17, 21-12 to face Germany’s Xu Huaiwen.

The only Malaysian mixed pair who made it to the second round, Wong Pei Tty/Koo Kien Keat also lost to the Danish pair, Kamila Rytter Juhl/Thomas Laybourn 22-24, 11-22.
