KEEN to redeem himself after the semifinal defeat in the team event, Lee Chong Wei was the last man standing in the mens singles last night.

Thailands Boonsak Polsana was bundled out 20-22, 21-11, 21-7 by the Bukit Mertajam ace in 48 minutes.

Next, its Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat in the semifinal.

Chief coach Yap Kim Hock said Chong Wei has the edge over the Indonesian ace.

Taufik has been playing a few tough matches here. Its up to Chong Wei to exploit that and turn it to his advantage,Kim Hock said.

Chong Wei did not play in the team event against Hong Kong and has had enough rest. I just hope everything clicks for him tomorrow (today),said Kim Hock.

While Chong Wei continues to carry the flag high, Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, the 2003 All-England champion, remains an enigma.

He fell to Lee Hyun-il from South Korea 20-22, 6-21 in 25 minutes.

In the mixed doubles, a crucial tip from coach Rexy Mainaky paved the way for Fairuzizuan Tazari-Wong Pei Tty to advance to the semi-final after defeating Lee Jae-jin-Lee Hyo Jung 22-20, 11-21 and 21-13.

In the rubber game, the pair were instructed to send the shuttle low to deny Hyo Jung the chance to execute her jumping smash.

I told them to tap the shuttle and vary their game. The Koreans committed unforced errors and Im glad they have entered the last four, said Rexy.

Fairuzizuan-Pei Tty will square off with Chinas Guo Zheng Bo-Gao Ling today.

Meanwhile, Chinas womens singles Olympic badminton champion Zhang Ning was ousted from the Asian Games, losing 21-19, 21-19 to Hong Kongs Yip Pui Yin in the quarter-finals.
