Ho Chi Minh City: Malaysian shuttler Chong Wei Feng kicked off his Vietnam Open campaign with a straight-set victory over Chan Yan Kit of Hong Kong 21-17, 21-5 in the men’s singles first round on Tuesday. Zulfadli Zulkiffli who has been dragged into the recent discussion of whether he should join the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), also breezed into the second round of the Vietnam Open with a 21-4, 21-18 victory over Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chia Hsuan on Tuesday at Nguyen Du Stadium. He will face Indonesian Ginting Anthony on Wednesday.

Among the other Malaysian men’s singles players to advance was Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif after a walkover from his opponent in the first round. Arif will play qualifier Shreyansh Jaiswal of India in the second round. Unfortunately, Malaysian men’s shuttlers such as Goh Soon Huat, Zulhelmi Zulkiffli, Lim Zhen Ting, Soong Joo Ven, Daren Liew, Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, Chiang Jiann Shiarng, and Tan Chun Seang were sent packing in the first round.

In other matches, men’s singles top seed Tommy Sugiarto who is aiming to garner enough points for Olympic qualification, needed only 32 minutes to defeat Ai Wei Jian of Malaysia 21-12, 21-13. Sugiarto will take on Thammasin Sitthikom of Thailand in the second round.

Meanwhile, mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying and women’s doubles Amelia Alicia Anscelly/ Soong Fie Cho will start their bids for the Vietnam Open title on Wednesday.
