Lee Chong Wei looked as if he might have a tough match against Angus Ng Ka Long when they were locked in a neck-and-neck battle early in the first set, with the score tied at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 6-6, 9-9, and 10-10. Lee then quickly reestablished his dominance, as the focused Malaysian wasted no time taking charge in the  rest of the set to clinch the game with 21-17.Lee Chong Wei should get some rest and relaxation after the Canada Open.

Lee started the second set more promisingly, as the Malaysian reeled off eight consecutive points after the score was tied at 13-13, to dispose his Hong Kong opponent 21-13 to capture his Canada Open crown. After sealing two titles in two weeks (Lee won the US Open title at New York last Sunday), Lee has celebrated his return to the highest level of badminton with impressive fashion.

 

Third seed Michelle Li of Canada hit victory playing in front of home crowd, as she held her nerve, fighting tooth and nail and saving four match points before securing a dramatic 21-17, 25-23 win against unseeded Kaori Imabeppu of Japan to claim the women’s singles title.

In women’s doubles final, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa capped off a brilliant day for the Indian camp by beating the women’s doubles’ number one seeds from Netherlands, Eefje Muskens/Selena Piek 21-19,21-16.

Meanwhile, reigning US Open men’s doubles champions Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen of China held off a spirited challenge by unseeded compatriots Huang Kaixiang/Wang Sijie, to prevail in men’s doubles final 17-21, 21-12, 21-18 in 44 minutes.

Shrugging off the disappointment of losing to Huang Kaixiang/Huang Dongping at last week’s US Open mixed doubles final, Reginald Lee Chun Hei/Chau Hoi Wah of Hong Kong ensured such horrific crashes won’t happen again on Sunday as they blasted past Andrei Adistia/Vita Marissa of Indonesia 21-16, 21-18 to win the mixed doubles title.
