WHILE the national singles shuttlers marched impressively into the second round, the doubles pairs struggled at the Korea Open yesterday with all the womens pairs shown the exit in the first round.

Even Malaysia Open mens doubles champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong struggled while Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah progressed easily into the second round.

While Tan Fook-Wan Wah had it easy against Australias Ashley Brehaut-Aji Basuki Sindoro with a 21-9, 21-12 win, Kien Keat-Boon Heong had to work hard for their three-game win over Germanys Roman Spitko-Michael Fuchs.

Asian Games champions Kien Keat-Boon Heong made quick work of the Germans to take the first game 21-9.

But it was a totally different match in the second game as they were challenged point for point and in the end, surrendered the game to Spitko-Fuchs 18-21.

Fortunately, Kien Keat-Boon Heong recovered to subdue the Germans 21-10 to make a date with Englands Anthony Clark-Robert Blair in the second round today. The English pair beat Indonesias Rian Sukmawan-Eng Hian 21-15, 18-21, 21-13.

Another mens pair, Chew Choon Eng-Hong Chieng Hun lost to Thailands Sudket Prapakamol-Patapol Ngernsrisuk 22-20, 24-20. The Thais take on Tan Fook-Wan Wah today.

Mohd Fairuzizuan Tazari-Lin Woon Fui also bit the dust with a 21-15, 21-8 loss to Polands Robert Mateusiak-Michal Logosz.

However, it was the end of the road for womens pairs Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui, Fong Chew Yen-See Phui Leng and Mooi Hing Yau-Ooi Yu Hang.

Pei Tty-Eei Hui were beaten by Japans Kumiko Ogura-Reiko Shiota 21-15, 21-13 while Hing Yau-Yu Hang and Chew Yen-Phui Leng also bowed out in straight games.
