Dubai: Taiwan’s Tai Tzu Ying claimed the women’s singles title with a 21-17, 21-12 win over South Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun at the BWF Destination Dubai World Superseries Finals on Sunday.

Making up for her failed attempt last year, Tai showed an early resolve as she led 11-3 at the first change-over. Sung tried to use her superior reach and out-fox her shorter opponent. But Tai showed versatility often catching Sung off-guard to take the first set 21-17.Tai Tzu Ying with her Superseries Finals trophy

The second set too moved in a similar direction with Tai going in with a 11-5 advantage at the change-over. Tai, who ended runner-up at last year’s finale where she went down to China’s Li Xuerui eventually eased her way through the set 21-12 to claim her first-ever Superseries Finals crown.Tai Tzu Ying (right) and Sung Ji Hyun

“Tai is now as good as the top Chinese players,” admitted Sung.

“She is very aggressive and powerful; I found it hard to return her smashes today.” Tai played down her victory.

“I didn’t expect it to be this easy. Maybe Sung was not at her best and she made many mistakes,” said the Taiwanese player who found her form late in the season.

“I was sick twice this year; that’s why I could not compete at a high level. Having won the Hong Kong Open and this event, I expect that my opponents will study me closely, but that’s something I cannot avoid. I will have to adjust accordingly.”
