All England Championships: Chong Wei begins campaign in style

Chong Wei, the joint third seed, secured a 21-12, 21-4 win in his first round match against Chetan Anand of India which lasted just 18 minutes.

Chong Wei, seeking his first All England final appearance after reaching the semi-finals in 2005 and 2006, will meet Denmarks Kasper Oedum today.

However, Kay Bins challenge ended with a whimper as he suffered a 21-11, 21-15 defeat to Park Sung Hwan of South Korea.

Simon Santoso, who eliminated Wong Choong Hann and Kuan Beng Hong in the qualifying rounds on Tuesday, sent Tsuen Seng packing with a 15-21, 21-13, 21-9 win.

2010-2012 project shuttler Tan Chun Seang also crashed out when he lost 21-12, 21-7 to Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand.

Hafiz Hashim and his brother Roslin were involved in late matches last night. Hafiz played John Moody of New Zealand while Roslin took on World No 1 Lin Dan of China.

In the mens doubles, Malaysia Open champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and three other pairs advanced to the second round.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong, the joint fifth seeds, secured a close 23-21, 21-18 win over Sigit Budiarto-Fran Kurniawan of Indonesia in 30 minutes. They are expected to meet another Indonesian pair Luluk Hadiyanto-Alven Yulianto today.

Veteran pair Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah also advanced with a 21-15, 11-21, 21-16 win over Englands Anthony Clark-Robert Blair. Tan Fook-Wan Wah will meet Denmarks Peter Steffensen-Rasmus Andersen.

Tan Bin Shen-Ong Soon Hock, who came through the qualifying rounds, defeated Indonesias Rian Sukmawan-Eng Hian 21-15, 23-21 in 30 minutes and are expected to meet top seeds Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun of China next.

Lin Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan Tazari started on a wrong footing when they dropped the first game against Howard Bach-Bob Malaythong of the United States but recovered to secure a 15-21, 21-16, 21-13 win.

They next next opponents should either be joint third seeds Jung Jae Sung-Lee Jae Jin of South Korea or Simon Mollyhus-Anders Kristiansen.

Another pair Gan Teik Chai-Zakry Latif were involved in a late match against Germanys Roman Spitko-Michael Fuchs.

In the womens singles, Julia Wong advanced to the second round when she thrashed Monthila Meemek of Thailand 21-13, 21-6 in just 22 minutes.

Julia is expected to meet either Jiang Yanjiao of China or Yao Jie of the Netherlands today.
