Hong Kong: The Hong Kong Open Badminton Championships will be held from November 18 to 23 at the Hong Kong Coliseum, attracting around 200 of the world’s best players. The event uses a knock-out system and consists of men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
Speaking at a press conference today, Major Sports Events Committee Vice-Chairman Terry Smith congratulated the Hong Kong Badminton Association for bringing the spectacular event to Hong Kong, which showcases the city’s ability to host large-scale international sports competitions and enhances its profile as a major sports events center in Asia.
A hugely popular sport in the urban confines of East Asia, badminton has a loyal following in Hong Kong. The committee has also awarded “M” Mark status to the event for 10 consecutive years.
The tournament is sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation and the grand prize is increased from US$250,000 to US$350,000 being the highest prize for “Hong Kong Open” in history.
