“This is my first time to play in Copenhagen, I am extremely excited! This city has an extra special meaning to me because my father became world champion here 31 years ago,” said Tommy during a practice session in Ballerup Super Arena.

Icuk Sugiarto was one of the world’s best singles players during the 1980s and was known for his speed and power play. Sugiarto won the gold medal at the 1983 IBF World Championships, upsetting fellow countryman Liem Swie King in a closely fought final 15-8, 12-15, 17-16.Icuk (left) and Tommy Sugiarto

“My dad has been praying for me to triumph in Copenhagen, I hope his prayers get answered,” said Tommy.

Despite the many differences and adjustments Tommy has to make, Tommy felt Copenhagen provided him a great atmosphere to thrive.

“Even though I have to adjust myself to the temperature, time, and food in Copenhagen, but I feel good sparring in Europe, because the shuttlecock used matches with the shuttlecock I’ve been using. Furthermore, I can control the drift much better in Ballerup Super Arena compare to other stadiums in Asia,” added the number one men’s singles player of Indonesia.

Tommy and the Indonesian teams had their first training session that lasted for one an hour on Saturday.
