Singapore men's badminton gets a big boost by qualified in the Thomas Cup. It's women's team also booked spot for the prestigious Uber Cup, both will be held in New Delhi from 18-25 May.
"I couldn't believe it when I heard the news," said Derek Wong, the top men's singles in Singapore. Derek's father Wong Shoon Keat took Singapore to the Thomas Cup Finals in 1986.
"I am really very proud to be able to repeat what my dad had done to the country,” said Wong. This also the first time Singapore's men's and women's badminton team playing in both Thomas Cup and Uber Cup finals in the same year.
Ronnie Lim, CEO of Badminton Association of Singapore said: "This is a good sign, and this shows that Singapore's badminton is on its way to become one of the elite badminton nations in the world".
Singapore will play in Group A of Thomas Cup, which also consists of 13-time Thomas Cup champions Indonesia, Thailand and Nigeria.
The women's team is however located in the same group with South Korea, 3-time champs Indonesia and Australia in the Group B of Uber Cup.
Singapore's newly appointed coach Liu Qingdong admitted Singapore has tough draws for both men's and women's team. However, he pledged that Singapore will give a good fight in both Thomas and Uber Cup.
