PETALING JAYA: S. Kisona is the only Malaysian shuttler left standing in the individual event of the Asian Junior Championships in Taiwan.

On a day the other national shuttlers fell like tenpins, Kisona stormed her way into the girls’ singles quarter-finals.

She began the day with a gutsy performance, beating China’s Wang Xinyuan 21-13, 20-22, 21-14 in a tough 52-minute second round match.

In the third round, Kisona downed India’s Gadde Ruthvika Shivani 21-11, 22-20 to set up a quarter-final clash against second-seeded Busanan Ongbumrungpan of Thailand. S. Kisona in a file photo. Lee Ying Ying was the only other national girls’ singles shuttler to make it past the second round. She beat Chang Yu-chen of Taiwan 21-16, 21-14 in the second round but lost to Qin Jinjing of China 21-8, 21-6 in the third round.

Ho Yen Mei and Goh Jin Wei failed to get past the second round after losing to shuttlers from China and Singapore respectively.

In the boys’ singles, Tan Teck Han also got off to a good start when he beat Taiwan’s Liou Wei-chi 21-15, 19-21, 21-15 in a thrilling second round tie. But, he too failed to get past the third round when he fell to Vietnam’s Pham Cao Cuong, who won 15-21, 21-16, 21-13.

Lee Zii Jia and Cheam June Wei lost in the second round.

With their defeats, there won’t be a boys’ singles champion from Malaysia this time. Last year, Soo Teck Zhi won the boys’ singles title in Sabah.

Both the national girls’ doubles pairs – Goh Yea Ching-Peck Yen Wei and Raja Nurnina Raja Azlan Shah-Yap Zhen – lost in the third round as well.

Yea Ching-Yen Wei lost to China’s Jiang Binbin-Tang Pingyang 21-17, 21-16 while Raja Nurnina-Yap Zhen went down 21-19, 21-18 to Lestari Nisak Puji-Rositawati Rika of Indonesia.

Malaysia’s only hope in the boys’ doubles – Ng Di Hua-Chua Khek Wei – did well to beat Chang Hsuan-wen-Lin Shang-kai of Taiwan 21-15, 24-22 in the second round but lost to Shimono Hashiru-Tsuneyama Kanta of Japan 21-16, 21-15 in the third.

The mixed doubles pairs of Sim Guo Zheng-Eng Pui Yee, Tan Jinn Hwa-Goh Yea Ching, Chen Jia Huo-Yap Zhen and Chua Khek Wei-Peck Yen Wei all crashed out in the second round.

It is now left to Kisona to keep the Malaysian flag flying high.
