Thailand Open champion, Sony Dwi Kuncoro, continued his winning streak by defeating fellow Indonesian and 2004 Olympic gold medalist, Taufik Hidayat, in straight sets in the second round of the 2012 Djarum Indonesian Open in Jakarta on Thursday.

Playing before hundreds of Indonesian supporters at the Istora Indoor Stadium in the Senayan Sports Complex, the two crowd favorites started their match cautiously, chasing each other’s points at 6-6 to 7-7, kompas.com reported.Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia returns a shot to Brice Leverdez of France during their men’s singles qualifier match at the Djarum Indonesia Open on Tuesday.

Sony, who has recently made a comeback after struggling with back and wrist injuries, then took control of the game with his net play, leading at 11-8.

Taufik, who won their last three meetings, tried to turn the tables by delivering his sharp smashes, but Sony managed to overcome his compatriot by leading at 14-11 and 15-12, before winning, 21-14.

In the second set, both players relied on their slow-paced game, but Sony took the lead with 11-9, 14-12, 17-12 and 19-15.

The victory marks Sony’s second win against his senior, the first triumph back in the 2002 JVC Asian Championships saw Sony win 15-12, 15-5.
