HYDERABAD, Aug 15 – It was a disastrous ending for Malaysian shuttlers at the world championship, after both men’s doubles pair fizzled out in the semi-finals today.

The South Korean and Chinese shuttlers spoilt what otherwise could be have been an all Malaysian final in the men’s doubles tomorrow.

In the first semifinal, Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari displayed superb combination to outplay Chinese pair Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng to win the first set 21-18.

The top-rated Chinese duo returned to level in the second set 24-22.

In the exhilarating final set, Mohd Zakary and Abdul Latif cracked and allowed their rivals to win by 21-15.

“We lost a golden opportunity. Our tactics were good but we were just thinking of winning the match and made some mistakes.

“We were not focused in the last minutes and they scored quick points, the gap was too big for us to catch up,” Mohd Fairuzizuan told reporters.

In the adjacent court, another Malaysian pair, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong played out a similar performance, but yet failed to tame the highly-charged Korean pair of Jung Jae Sung and Lee Yong Dae.

Despite grabbing a comfortable lead in the first set, wining 21-16, Koo and Tan could not sustain their victory momentum and lost 14-21, 20-22, in the subsequent sets.

“Our pair played very well but credit must be given to the Korean pair too. They (Tan-Koo) were thinking more of tactics and made some mistakes, and gave away easy points in the last set.

“Luck was not there for both our pairs today, every time in major tournaments this always happens (defeat). We had good chance to secure the title but it was wasted,” said a disappointed national doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky.
