World number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei successfully defended his men’s singles title at the Malaysian Open Super Series after defeating South Korea’s Park Sung Hwan in straight sets at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.

Chong Wei, the first seed, only needed 39 minutes to win 21-14, 21-13, thus clinching his fifth title after winning them in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008. “I never expected an easy win against Park Sung Hwan in this final as my previous matches were decided in rubber sets by my opponents,” he said.

In the quarter-final and semi-final matches, Chong Wei had to endure three-set matches before winning against Simon Santoso of Indonesia, and 2007 champion Danish Peter Gade Christensen, respectively.

SOUTH Korea's biggest names in men's singles -- Lee Hyun Il (left) and Shon Seung Mo -- have quit badminton and what's even worse is that there aren't any able replacements except for Park Sung Hwan.

Hyun Il, a semi-finalist in last year's Beijing Olympics, quit the national team after getting married. The 29-year-old has not been training since the Olympics.

Besides winning the Korea and German Opens, his other memorable outing last year was in Malaysia Open where, as a qualifier, he reached the final but lost to eventual champion World No 1 Lee Chong Wei.

KUALA LUMPUR: The home fans will be rooting for an all-Malaysian men’s singles semi-final between Lee Chong Wei and Liew Daren.

But Chong Wei is more fancied to advance than Daren in quarter-final matches against Indonesian Simon Santoso and Dane Peter Gade-Christensen respectively at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.

Yesterday, Chong Wei defeated Vietnamese Nguyen Tien Minh 21-9, 18-21, 21-7 in a second-round match that saw the world number one struggling to adapt to the draught in the stadium in the second game. And Daren continued a fairy tale run in his home Open, blowing away a toothless Hsueh Hsuan-yi of Taiwan 21-14, 21-12.

Although Choong Wei had to slog for the win over Tien Minh, the top seed and defending champion felt that he was playing better by the day.
