He has a busy schedule involving coaching among schools, senior clubs, juniors and the island’s top players in the county squad. The initiative is part of a total revamp of playing structures following the departure of development officer Paul Le Tocq in March.

Dwi Kuncoro takes China Masters

BEIJING: Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kuncoro defeated Chen Jin of China in straight sets to take the China Masters badminton tournament men's singles title on Sunday.

Dwi Kuncoro's win comes on the heels of his victory a week earlier in the Japan Open, giving him further consolation after he crashed out of last month's Beijing Olympics.

Meanwhile, Zhou Mi of Hong Kong edged out Chinese rookie Wang Lin for the singles final at the tournament in the city of Changzhou.

The three-set match went to Zhou, 21-19, 19-21, 21-16.

Dwi Kuncoro beat an injury-nagged Chen in two sets for the men's title, 21-19, 21-18.

RASHID Sidek's (pic) request to expose the back-up players has received the BA of Malaysia's (BAM) support as the majority of them will be competing in the Macau Open beginning tomorrow.

A total of 10 back-up shuttlers have gained direct entry into the main draw as quite a number of top 20 players have given the grand prix gold tournament a miss.

plight of New Zealand's major international badminton tournament, the US$50,000 World Grand Prix event to be held November 11-16 is in the balance after a shortfall of sponsorship has left the tournament floundering and on the edge of being cancelled.

The KLRC tournament to be held at the North Shore Events Centre has been sponsored by the Kuala Lumpur Rackets Club for the past couple of years and has been held at the Auckland Badminton Centre where crowds have been at a sellout level and enthusiasm has been high.

KLRC will still be one of the main sponsors but there is still a shortfall which has not been made up.

MALAYSIA'S challenge in the China Masters folded as the three remaining pairs crashed out in the quarter-finals in Changzhou yesterday.

Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui found the going tough against second seeds Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China and suffered a 21-11, 21-13 defeat in just 27 minutes in the men's doubles quarter-finals.
