KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong and Wong Mew Choo secured their berths in the semifinals on Saturday after clearing the quarterfinal hurdles in the Malaysian Open badminton championships held at Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium, here Friday night.

The Doha Asian Games men's doubles champion, Kien Keat/Boon Heong, continued their superb performance by edging the much higher ranking Japanese duo and world number 23, Shuichi Sakamoto/Shintaro Ikeda, in straight sets 21-13, 21-17.

New Delhi, Jan 19: Saina Nehwal made a second round exit in her first tournament of the season when she lost to home challenge Mew Choo Wong at the Proton Malaysian Open Super Series in Kuala Lumpur.

World number 26 Saina lost the encounter 17-21 12-21 to Wong, placed 10 notches above her in rankings.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's young doubles pair, Ong Soon Hock/Tan Bin Shen produced the biggest upset Thursday night when they beat the world's number one men's doubles pair, Fu Haifeng/Cai Yun of China in the second round of the Malaysia Open badminton championship, held at Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium, here.

Soon Hock, 22, and Bin Shen, 23, ranked number 32 in the world, edged the top seed and the 2005 All England champion, 25-23, 21-17 in 39 minutes and will battle against the American and Indonesian combination, Tony Gunawan (USA)/Candra Wijaya (INA) in the quarter-finals, which will start at 6 pm Friday.
