PETALING JAYA: It will be an all-Klang Valley final in the 100Plus National Junior inter-state mixed team badminton championships.

Defending champions Kuala Lumpur advanced beating Kedah 6-3 in the semi-finals at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara yesterday. And Selangor qualified with a 6-5 win over Johor.

While it was smooth sailing for KL against Kedah, Selangor were made to slog by surprise package Johor before clinching their winning point through the mixed doubles pair of Muhd Syawal Ismail-Yap Harn Xin, who beat Zairul Anuar-Nurul Intan Jaffar 21-12, 21-11.

It was heartbreak for Johor, who had upset last year’s runners-up and second seeds Penang in their opening Group B match before beating Sabah 8-3 for a place in the semi-finals.

PETALING JAYA: It was a grand night for hosts Denmark in the Copenhagen Masters at Falconer Centre on Monday. They made a clean sweep of all three titles at stake.

And it was Tine Rasmussen, who made it happen for the Danes.

She dashed Xu Huaiwen’s hopes of retaining the title, winning the women’s singles final match 21-18, 21-17.

Last year, the German beat Hong Kong’s Zhou Mi to claim the title.

Kenneth Jonassen played in his last international competition but there was no happy ending for him. He was beaten 14-21, 15-21 by compatriot Peter-Gade Christensen in the men’s singles final.

The men’s doubles title went to the 2003 world champions Lars Paaske-Jonas Rasmussen, who came from behind to beat Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen 14-21, 21-13, 21-19.

WONG Choong Hann's days as a top shuttler are over but the veteran is confident of making the final of the season-ending Copenhagen Masters which begins today.

Choong Hann is in Group B with local favourite Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark and the latter's compatriot Joachim Persson and recent results favour the Malaysian.

Christensen would be the biggest threat for Choong Hann but the Malaysian, having won their last two meetings, will fancy his chances.
PETER GADE CHRISTENSEN
Choong Hann defeated Christensen in the China Open last month and in the Super Series Masters Finals in Kota Kinabalu last week.

PETALING JAYA: Lee Chong Wei and the men’s doubles pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong have good chances to earn back-to-back titles at the Malaysian Open, which will be played at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Jan 6-11.

But it will be tough for the women’s pair of Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty to follow suit.

Chong Wei, Kien Keat-Boon Heong and Eei Hui-Pei Tty were the champions in the Super Series Masters Finals in Kota Kinabalu last week.

Pei Tty-Chin Eei are the top seed for the first time in the Malaysian Open but they have tough opponents in China’s former world number one Zhang Jiewen-Yang Wei in their quarter of the draw.

Jiewen-Yang Wei are former Olympic and world champions and Pei Tty-Eei Hui will have to rise to the occasion to beat the vastly experienced pair, who have quit the national squad but are continuing to play on individual sponsorship.

If Pei Tty-Eei Hui manage to upstage the fifth-seeded Chinese pair, they are likely to earn a repeat clash of the Masters Finals final against Indonesian third seeds Vita Marissa-Lilyana Natsir.Tough Opener: Wong Choong Hann takes on Sony Dwi Kuncoro in the first round.
