KUALA LUMPUR: It was a memorable day for world No. 1 men’s singles shuttler Lee Chong Wei and coach Misbun Sidek when they bagged the top prizes at the 2008 National Sports Award ceremony here yesterday.

The 28-year-old Chong Wei was named as the best sportsman while Misbun lifted the best male coach award.

Chong Wei, however, was not present at the award ceremony and his father, Lee Ah Chai, received the trophy and RM10,000 on his behalf from the King.Sportswoman of the Year Nicol David and Lee Ah Chai (father of Sportsman of the Year Lee Chong Wei) showing off the trophies after the 2008 National Sports Award ceremony in Kuala Lumpur Monday night. They received the trophies from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.

Chong Wei is in Hyderabad for the Indian Open beginning tomorrow and he is aiming to win his first back-to-back title outside of Malaysia. He scored a sensational win over Lin Dan of China last week to win the Swiss Open title.

The other nominees who Chong Wei beat to the award yesterday were Mohd Azizul Hasni Awang (cycling), Zulmazran Zulkifli (bowling), Safuan Said (lawn bowls), Cheng Chu Sian (archery) and Lee Hup Wei (athletics). His outstanding run last year included a silver medal-winning effort at the Beijing Olympics in August.

It was the second time Chong Wei won the national award after 2005.

“It’s nice to win the award again. This time, it is more special because my coach is also one of the winners,” said Chong Wei in a telephone interview from Hyderabad.

“This will spur me to achieve more good results for Malaysia in badminton. My main goal this year is the world championships (in India from Aug 11-16).”

India's most successful women badminton player Saina Nehwal on Tuesday (March 24) brought to fore yet another incident of government apathy towards athletes, saying she was yet to receive the Rs 20 lakh cash award promised to her by the Andhra Pradesh state government in October last year.

"I have not received the award yet. It's really disgusting. I can't afford to run after them for the money which I deserve," a disappointed Saina said after her practice session at the Gachchibowli Stadium on Tuesday.

Scotland have today named their line-up for the Sudirman Cup in Guangzhou, China, from May 10-17.

The 10-strong squad includes Emma Mason for the first time since recovering from the Achilles injury which kept her out of action for most of last season.

The squad, led by team manager Rita Yuan Gao and team coach Dan Travers, will leave for China on April 27 and will prepare for the world mixed team championships with a special training camp in RitaÕs home province, Wuhan.

"This is the second part of a special reciprocal arrangement with China, who sent over a squad to Scotland before Christmas," said Chinese-born former Scotland international Yuan Gao, who was a playing member of the 2007 Scotland squad when the Cup was held for the second time in Glasgow. "The training camp will be vital preparation as Scotland aim to improve on their 19th place finish in the 2007 Cup."

LEE Chong Wei and Nicol David, rightly, were crowned as the 2008 National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year last night.

It was easy for the selection panel to reach its decision for the two were Malaysia's standout performers in 2008.

However, questions have been asked about what the future will be after the two hang up their racquets.

Chong Wei, no thanks to the rest of the singles players and inconsistent doubles, is Malaysia's sole flag bearer in badminton while Nicol is on her own.

But the future, Timesport's reporters found out during last week's Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) meets, can be rosy provided immediate action is taken.
The badminton championships in Kangar saw a talented bunch in the Under-12 and this, provided the BA of Malaysia and its affiliates swing into action quickly, will assure a brighter future.

KANGAR: The national schools (MSSM) badminton championships’ red-hot favourite Zulfadli Zulkifli survived a scare yesterday before booking his place in the final of the boys’ Under-18 singles competition.

The 16-year-old Selangor shuttler, the second seed in the championships held at the Wawasan Hall here, was stretched to three games before prevailing 21-23, 21-10, 21-18 against Kuala Lumpur’s Tew Gee Chong.

Zulfadli, who is chasing his first Under-18 title to add to his previous MSSM singles triumphs in the Under-12 and Under-15 categories, blamed the lighting conditions at the court for his sluggish display.

“It was the first time all week that I was required to play on Court A and I was unprepared for the lighting conditions there. When I was playing on the left side, the ceiling lights were blurring my vision every time I looked up,” he said.

“My opponent was also on song and made life difficult for me. I need to improve on my performance and handle the court conditions better in the final tomorrow.”
