SEREMBAN: It was not the way he wanted to win but yesterday, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin finally nailed his first title in the 100Plus National Junior Circuit Grand Finals at the NSCRC Hall here.

The 18-year-old came back from a 16-21 defeat in the first game to force compatriot Mohd Syawal Ismail to a rubber game with a 21-11 win. But the deciding game was not played because Syawal felt dizzy and conceded a walkover.Iskandar Zulkarnain

It was Iskandar’s first title in his last national Grand Finals after agonising misses in the Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 categories.

“It was unfortunate that Syawal had to retire. I would have preferred for the match to be completed,” said Iskandar.

“But I have nothing to complain about. I have finally won my first title on the circuit. I was in the finals of all the other lower age-group categories but I never got it right.”

OLYMPIC silver medallist Gail Emms has been awarded an MBE for her services to badminton in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.HONOURED: Olympic silver medallist Gail Emms rewarded for services to badminton

Emms, who teamed up with Nathan Robertson to capture silver at Athens 2004, hung up her racquet after the Beijing Olympics, but currently works for Badminton England in an ambassadorial capacity.

The 31-year-old also captured the World Championships title in 2006, and the European crown in 2004, again with Robertson.

"It came as a bit of a shock but it's nice to be appreciated and reflects all the hard work that all athletes have to put in to their sport," said Emms.

"This award isn't about me, it's about all the coaches and support staff who have been behind my success."

Emms collected 68 caps for England and remains Commonwealth champion. She and Robertson were the world's number one pair between 2005 and 2006 in a purple patch, which brought back-to-back victories at the Yonex All England and Wilson Swiss Open.

She also teamed up with Donna Kellogg in the women's doubles to be crowned European champions in 2006 and runners up in 2008.

"Her achievements in recent years have been outstanding and she is truly recognised as one of the greatest players of all time. This award is richly deserved," added Badminton England chief executive Adrian Christy.

Nova Widianto and Lilyana Natsir are closing in on their second Super Series title of the year. And they’re doing it with relative ease.

The top-seeded Indonesian pair overwhelmed Poland’s Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Kostiuczyk 21-17, 21-8 in a mixed doubles quarterfinal match in the Singapore Super Series, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday. Indonesia's Sony Dwi Kuncoro prepares to hit a return to South Korea's Park Sung-hwan.

In a late match, the women’s unseeded tandem of Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Greysia Polii upset top-ranked Chin Eei Hui and Wong Pei Tty of Malaysia 17-21, 21-16, 21-19.

It was another lopsided win for Nova and Lilyana, who logged only 26 minutes on the court, on the same day countryman Sony Dwi Kuncoro lost to an unseeded South Korean in men’s singles.
