WORLD No 2 Lee Chong Wei and high-riding women's doubles Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui advanced to the quarter-finals of the Denmark Open with convincing victories in Odense yesterday.

Chong Wei, the second seed, beat Poland's Przemyslaw Wacha 21-12, 21-13 in the second round match which lasted 30 minutes.

Pei Tty-Eei Hui, who eliminated World No 1 Zhang Yawen-Wei Yili of China in the first round, defeated India's Jwala Gupta-Shruti Kurian 22-20, 21-19 to book their place in the last eight. They will play China's Zhao Tinting-Yu Yang today.

Big time badminton has arrived in New Zealand.

The world junior championships, which started with opening rounds in the teams event at Trusts Stadium in Waitakere City yesterday, will explode into a full-on international event over the next few days with the individual competition starting on Tuesday bringing together some of the best players from 33 countries.

PETALING JAYA: Veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah suffered a shocking first round defeat at the Danish Open in Odense on Wednesday. 

The World Championships bronze medallists went down 21-23, 21-13, 17-21 to Americans Howard Bach-Malaythong Bob Khan.

Recent disputes within the Badminton World Federation (BWF) have jeopardized the future of the world's fastest racket sport. During the World Championships in Kuala Lumpur in June, BWF President Kang Hyung-joon made a statement regarding the organization's overall performance and a vote of no confidence made against him at a council meeting in Glasgow in March. In an interview with The Jakarta Post's Primastuti Handayani at his office in Seoul recently, Kang expressed his concern about the future of badminton. Below are excerpts from their discussion.
