JOHOR BAHARU, Nov 13 (Bernama) -- Familiar faces are poised to rule in the Proton Johor Open Badminton championship at the City Council Indoor stadium.

Leading the charge into the final tomorrow are the undisputed Malaysian No 1 men and women's singles players, respectively, Lee Chong Wei and Wong Mew Choo.

The men's doubles will also see a touch of similarity with the combination of Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong up against the veteran pair of Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah in the final.

Only the absence of the top women's pair of Chin Ee Hui and Wong Pei Tty from the championship has brought about a slight change to the women's doubles final match-up.

So, there was little surprise when Chong Wei came through his semi-final match against 4th seed Kuan Beng Hong with a 21-16,21-13 victory in 30 minutes.

And his opponent in the final is Mohd Arif Latif who overcame the challenge of third seed Chong Wei Feng in three games in scores of 13-21,21-19,21-10.

It's not often a sportsperson in the top couple of rankings in the world plays in New Zealand, but the KLRC US$50,000 New Zealand Open badminton tournament starting with initial matches on Tuesday at the North Shore Event Centre can easily claim it has one of the best.

Hong Kong's Zhou Mi entered this week's Grand Prix event at No3 in the world but then moved up to the top spot in the world rankings before just a few days ago being overtaken by Denmark's Tine Rasmussen who has a lead of three points (69483) ahead of Mi on 69480.

Defending title

If Zhou Mi, 29 is able to defending her title in Auckland she will retake the top world ranking, something she says might be a little difficult as she is trying to get over a dos of the flu.

"This competition is very important and it is important to be No1. It is a major event," she said through an interpreter "I'm not scared of not being able to get the ranking back. I'm confident I can win, but have to recover from the flu."

Zhou Mi recently winning the Macau Open Gold Grand Prix, the China Masters Super-Series, the Indian Gold Grand Prix and the Korea Super-Series. This was all after she was not selected by China which led to a dispute and her retirement in 2005 and her return to the sport and her change of nationality last year.

Zhou Mi will play her first round singles match at 5.20pm on Wednesday against Southland's Anna Rankin.

CURRENT World No 1 and Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei, the main drawcard in the Proton Johor Open badminton championships which begin at the Johor Baru City Council Indoor Stadium here today - will be on a mission of his own.

Chong Wei, the top seed, is the hot favourite for the title which will give him a shot at winning a record-breaking eighth men's singles national title and go one better than his coach Misbun Sidek. Lee Chong Wei is using the Johor Open as a build-up to the China Open and Hong Kong Open.

More importantly, Chong Wei is using the Johor Open as a build-up to the China Open in Shanghai (Nov 18-23) which will be followed by the Hong Kong Open (Nov 25-30).

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- The setting up of a national badminton academy that was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today, would have full-fledged facilities says Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) President Datuk Nadzmi Salleh.

Nadzmi said the academy would be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and training equipment for shuttlers.

"The academy will not only be a place for training but also double up as a research and development centre (R&D)," he told reporters here Tuesday.

Nadzmi said from the 30 courts proposed, two would be earmarked and equipped with devices, including cameras to help players and coaches to analyse their game and identify their flaws and weaknesses.

"Prior to the setting up, we will discuss and get feedback from all parties involved to determine the types of facilities that need to be put up or made available," he said.

Najib who officially opened a two-day National Sports Convention at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here today announced that the government would set up the academy at a cost of RM24 million.

"Since the 2012 London Olympics will take place in less than four years, work on the academy will start as soon as possible," said Nadzmi who added that a committee might be formed to ensure a smooth process in the setting up of the academy.

"In the long run, the academy can start generating income of its own and become self-sufficient instead of depending on BAM. The facilities can also be used by foreign shuttlers," he said.
