KOTA KINABALU: Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia are back on their feet, hungry for more success after a minor setback.

A knee injury to Markis saw them losing tamely to Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong in the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Open early this month.

Now that Markis is in better condition, the world number one are all fired up to regain their winning touch against the Malaysians in the Super Series Masters Finals here.

Both the pairs are in Group B with Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan (Ina-Usa) and Mathias Boe-Carsten Morgensen (Den). Group A comprises Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari (Mas), Jung Jae-sung-Lee Yong-dae (Kor), Robert Blair-Chris Adcock (Eng) and Simon Mollyhus-Anders Kristiansen (Den).

HONG KONG’S Zhou Mi will end the year as the world’s number one women’s singles player — ahead of China’s legion of stars.

And that is a personal success for Zhou Mi, who is being sponsored by KLRC Bhd, owned by Malaysian Datuk Seri Andrew Kam.

Zhou Mi, who left China with a heavy heart after the 2004 Athens Olympics to seek new fortunes in Hong Kong, said that the will to outperform the so called “invincible” Chinese players drove her to achieve remarkable results this year.Hong Kong's Zhou Mi during the interview after training for the World Super Series Masters Finals 2008 at the Likas Sports Complex in Kota Kinabalu on Wednesday - Starpic by Normimie Diun

FORMER Indonesian ace Tony Gunawan, who now resides in the United States, expressed surprise over the decision by several top players to snub the Super Series Masters Finals.

Gunawan, who partners Candra Wijaya, said that Super Series Masters Finals is not only rich in prize money but also one of major events organised by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and that the top shuttlers have the responsibility to promote badminton by competing in such events.

Indonesian men’s singles player Sony Dwi Kuncoro is back at his best after recovering from a hamstring injury.

And top it up with a favourable draw in the Super Series Masters Finals, the stocky Sony is set to be Malaysian Lee Chong Wei’s major threat for the title in the tournament beginning tomorrow at the Likas Indoor Stadium.

In the draw made yesterday, top seed and world number one Chong Wei is in Group A with Dane Peter Gade-Christensen, former Malaysian international Wong Choong Hann and Hong Kong’s Chan Yan Kit.

The second seeded Sony is in Group B with compatriot Taufik Hidayat, Denmark’s Joachim Persson and England’s Andrew Smith.

Barring any upsets, Chong Wei and Sony are tipped to top their groups in the tournament that offers a lucrative US$500,000 in total prize money.

Indonesian singles coach Hendrawan hoped that Sony and Taufik, who only confirmed his participation two days ago after recovering from a wrist injury, would make a strong finish to the season.

“The draw is fair and balanced. On current form, Chong Wei and the two Danes (Gade-Christensen and Persson) are strong contenders for the title,” he said.

The world number one overcame his toughest group opponent, Peter Gade of Denmark, 21-19, 21-17 in 39 minutes even though he declared afterwards that he was not in his best form.

Earlier in the day, the top seed had an easy opener against compatriot Wong Choong Hann. Lee hardly broke sweat, needing only 23 minutes to dispose of the ageing Wong 21-14, 21-13.Lee Chong Wei

Gade had earlier beaten Hong Kong's Chan Yan Kit 21-15, 21-17. He plays Wong next and should have no difficulty overcoming the Malaysian to secure the second semi-final berth from Group A.
