Khim Wah-V Shem deserve to be fielded, says ex-Olympic champ

HOW brave are the Malaysian coaches? That’s what Indonesian Rexy Mainaky intends to find out when at the Sudirman Cup takes off at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil this Sunday.

Rexy said it would take a brave coach to go with world No. 15 Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem in the mixed team competition, which will be held from May 19-26.

Two weeks ago, Khim Wah-V Shem achieved a breakthrough when they beat Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong for the first time in the final to win their first international title as a pair at the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara.

FORMER Olympic gold medallist Rexy Mainaky is loving every minute of his high-profile job as Indonesia’s high performance director.

Rexy left Malaysia last year after serving for seven years. But not before pushing for the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to name a chief coach or a high performance director to chart the country’s badminton fortunes.

It did not work out for him in Malaysia but at least Rexy is glad that he’s got the chance to do it the right way for Indonesia.

As the new supremo, Rexy is ready to revive the flagging fortunes of Indonesian badminton.

The ever jovial and friendly Rexy officially started work last month – almost a year after leaving the BAM in February last year and trying his luck with the Philippines for a while.

Tey Seu Bock told the New Straits Times that the wildcard entry for the double Olympic champion -- which could affect the chances of Malaysia's world number one Lee Chong Wei -- gave China an unfair advantage.

"I don't understand the reason behind BWF's decision to give Lin Dan a wildcard despite China having three players in the men's singles. I cannot help thinking that people want China to win the title," he said.

THE BA of Malaysia's (BAM) tolerance level has no bounds when it comes to men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and their embarrassing defeat in the Malaysia Open grand prix gold is not going to affect their future in any way.

BAM had already thrown a lifeline to Kien Keat-Boon Heong last September by giving them until the World Championships in Guangzhou on Aug 5-11 to prove their worth and also gave them a rather unusual target -- at least a place in the final -- despite recommendations from the coaching and training committee that they be split.

It was the BAM executive council which decided to give them a lengthy extension although there were plans to combine Boon Heong with Goh V Shem, while Kien Keat was to be paired with either Lim Khim Wah or another player.

BAM's apprehension in making that move now has it ruing as Kien Keat-Boon Heong have reached a point of no return.

KUALA LUMPUR: PV Sindhu reaffirmed her status as the rising star of Indian badminton as she lifted her maiden Grand Prix Gold title in Malaysia after getting the better of Juan Gu of Singapore in a gruelling final on Saturday.

The top-seeded Indian took an hour and 11 minutes to prevail over her fifth seeded opponent, 21-17 17-21 21-19.

MEN'S doubles Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah inflicted more damage to the battered pride of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong by shocking the World No 3 to win the Malaysia Open grand prix gold title at Juara Stadium yesterday.

V Shem-Khim Wah registered a comprehensive 22-20, 21-15 victory to claim their first international title in 39 minutes.

The effort also stripped Kien Keat-Boon Heong of the only title in their grasp in the last 12 months and left them to ponder their career which has hit rock bottom.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong still have an escape clause despite their lacklustre performance as the BA of Malaysia (BAM) has set a final target in the World Championships in Guangzhou in August.

As for V Shem-Khim Wah, the title was a timely boost after poor form forced the coaches to split them last year and only recombined again five months ago where they earned qualification for the World Championships.

GRASSROOTS: Wants to produce quality players at club level

LI Mao, after travelling around the globe in a bid to produce players who can match the all-conquering China shuttlers, will take on the new challenge of producing players at club level and turn them into international shuttlers.
Li Mao, whose last involvement as a national coach was with Indonesia until the London Olympics, was also initially linked with a return to Malaysia as national singles coach for a second time but the BA of Malaysia (BAM) shelved the idea based on feedback from coaches.
He was the national singles coach and helped in Datuk Lee Chong Wei’s progress, beginning in 2005 but quit in early 2007 to join his former employers South Korea.
Li Mao joined New Vision Badminton Academy, run by former internationals Yeoh Kay Bin and K. Yogendran in late December, and the academy was relaunched as the Kawasaki Badminton Club in Kuala Lumpur recently.

SHAH ALAM: Former All-England champion Mohd Hafiz Hashim received the perfect boost ahead of his return to the courts after a six-month injury lay-off.

The 31-year-old, who will compete in the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara today, was revealed as the ambassador for badminton equipment giants Protech yesterday. He signed a two-year sponsorship deal.

Hafiz, who underwent an ankle tendon surgery in November, will be playing in the singles as well as the doubles with Mohamad Razif Abdul Latif.

KUALA LUMPUR: A swollen finger has ruled out world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei from the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold starting today at the Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.

In his absence, national singles coach Tey Seu Bock has challenged the other men’s singles hopefuls to step up and keep Malaysia’s good tradition going in the GP Gold.

Since its inception in 2009, Chong Wei has made the tournament his own by winning on all four occasions.

Seu Bock said Chong Wei picked up the injury en route to beating Kenichi Tago of Japan in the final of the India Open in New Delhi on Sunday.

Coach Hendrawan to put more emphasis on physical training (pic)

After four years of trial and error, former world champion Hendrawan is ready to do it his way in a bid to whip the back-up shuttlers into world-beaters.

For a start, he will place more emphasis on physical training for his shuttlers in the next six months and cut down on the number of international tournaments.

His players will probably take part in only five more Open tournaments before the year ends. These tournaments will be spaced out so that they can spend more time on their physical training.

His six players – Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, Goh Soon Huat, Loh Wei Sheng, Goh Giap Chin and Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub – will focus more on gym work and track running.
